President Murmu Unveils Bihar’s Fourth Krishi Road Map, Stresses on Organic Farming

Patna, 18th October 2023: President Droupadi Murmu unveiled Bihar’s fourth Krishi Road Map (2023-2028) on Wednesday, emphasizing on organic farming.

Addressing the gathering, the President underscored the centrality of agriculture to Bihar, not only as a source of livelihood for nearly half of the state’s population but also as a significant contributor to its GDP. She lauded the Government of Bihar for its consistent commitment to the Agricultural Road Map, initiated in 2008, which has led to substantial improvements in crop yields. Over the years, Bihar has made remarkable strides in the production of crops such as paddy, wheat, maize, as well as non-traditional commodities like mushrooms, honey, makhana, and fish.

President Murmu regarded the launch of the fourth Agricultural Road Map as a pivotal milestone in advancing these efforts.

President Murmu also commended Bihar’s farmers for their resilience and willingness to embrace innovative farming techniques, which earned them praise from a Nobel Prize-winning economist who deemed them “greater than scientists.” She highlighted the coexistence of traditional farming methods and modern practices as an exemplary fusion of tradition and modernity.

Furthermore, the President encouraged Bihar’s farmers to capitalize on the growing demand for organic products, emphasizing the benefits of organic farming in terms of reducing agricultural costs, environmental preservation, improved income for farmers, and the provision of nutritious food. She praised the government’s creation of an organic corridor along the Ganga River’s banks in several districts to promote organic farming.

In her address, President Murmu acknowledged the serious consequences of global warming and climate change, especially for the economically disadvantaged. Bihar’s recent experience of reduced rainfall prompted her to stress the importance of water conservation to preserve the state’s identity as a water-rich region. She advocated for Climate Resilient Agriculture as a means to address climate change by promoting biodiversity, reducing water resource exploitation, conserving soil fertility, and ensuring balanced nutrition.

Highlighting an environmental milestone, the President noted the production of ethanol from maize, a significant crop in Bihar, as a crucial step toward reducing fossil fuel dependency, environmental protection, and enhancing national energy security.

Concluding her remarks, President Murmu urged Bihar to play a vital role in India’s journey towards development. She emphasized the need to transcend narrow-minded thinking and embrace holistic development. She encouraged policymakers and the people of Bihar to chart a comprehensive path to progress in various spheres, including health, education, per capita income, and the Happiness Index, in addition to agriculture, as a means to realize the dream of a developed Bihar.
