Prisoner in Kaimur Attempts Suicide by Mutilating Private Parts, Cites Alleged Jail Abuse

Bhabhua: A prisoner in Kaimur, Bihar, attempted suicide by mutilating himself with a sharp weapon inside Bhabua jail, authorities said. The inmate, identified as Abhinandan Dubey, was rushed to Sadar Hospital in Bhabua for emergency treatment before being referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) due to the severity of his injuries.

Dubey, a resident of Orgaon under Bhagwanpur police station, is lodged in jail for allegedly murdering his wife. According to Dr Pushpendra Sharma, in charge of the emergency ward at Sadar Hospital, the prisoner inflicted the injuries using an iron hoe.

The incident has raised concerns over conditions inside the jail. Speaking from his hospital bed, Dubey alleged that jail constables regularly beat him with sticks, leading him to take the drastic step. “We used to work every day in jail, but the constables still thrashed me. I did this out of frustration,” he said.

Meanwhile, Additional Jail Superintendent present at the hospital attempted to prevent media coverage of the case and denied any knowledge of the nature of Dubey’s injuries. Kaimur Superintendent of Police, Harimohan Shukla, declined to comment on the matter.

Dubey was arrested in December last year after being caught attempting to dispose of his wife’s body in a canal. Police station in-charge Uday Kumar said that Dubey had strangled his wife on December 26, 2024 and was intercepted while trying to dispose of her remains. The police allege that the murder was driven by social pressure, as Dubey, a Brahmin, faced continuous taunts from his community for marrying a woman from the Bind caste.
