Bhabhua/Patna: A 26-year-old jawan of the Quick Response Team (QRT) in Bihar’s Bhabua district was critically injured after allegedly shooting himself in the head with an AK-47 rifle on Monday evening.
The incident took place around 7.30pm at the district police centre premises. The jawan, identified as Amlesh Kumar, a resident of Jamui district, was found bleeding and unconscious in his room by a fellow personnel returning from duty.
He was immediately rushed to Sadar Hospital, from where he was referred to a higher medical centre for advanced care. He has since been shifted to the BHU Trauma Centre in Varanasi. Officials confirmed that Amlesh was unmarried and had been living with other jawans in the police quarters.
Superintendent of Police Harimohan Shukla confirmed the incident and said the reasons behind the attempted suicide are yet to be determined. “A forensic examination of the service weapon and his mobile phone is underway. An investigation has been launched,” he said.
Police officials said the door to the jawan’s room had to be broken open after no response was received. Amlesh was found lying in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to the head.
He was not in a condition to give a statement, officials added.
