Rain thunderstorm lightning

Patna: Residents of Bihar experienced a brief spell of relief from the scorching heat as cloudy skies and light drizzle brought pleasant weather to Patna and surrounding areas on Monday night. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of rising temperatures and thunderstorms in the days ahead.

A yellow alert has been issued for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 km/h) in eight districts — East Champaran, West Champaran, Sitamarhi, Shivhar, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, and Kishanganj. The IMD predicts a 4–6°C rise in maximum temperature over the next four days, especially after the current 24-hour window.

Rainfall Brings Brief Relief

The recent rainfall brought temporary relief from the heat across northern Bihar. The highest rainfall of 57.6 mm was recorded in Purnia, while other notable figures include 26.6 mm in Kolgaon (Bhagalpur), 26.2 mm in Khanpur (Samastipur), and 22.0 mm in Bhawanipur (Purnia).

On Monday, Patna recorded a maximum temperature of 36.3°C, while Gopalganj and Dehri were the hottest at 38.2°C.

Southern Bihar to Witness Hot and Humid Weather

According to the Meteorological Centre in Patna, southern parts of Bihar are likely to experience hot and humid conditions in the coming days. While sporadic rainfall is expected in some areas, no heat wave conditions are currently forecast. However, from May 8, temperatures are expected to cross 40°C in several districts.

Heat Wave Alert for Western Bihar

The IMD has issued a special alert for western Bihar, where a heat wave is likely to develop from May 8. Currently, average maximum temperatures across the state are between 36°C and 40°C, but they are likely to climb further as westerly winds begin dominating from today.

Advisory Issued

Experts have urged the public to take necessary precautions against rising temperatures and potential heat wave conditions. Staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and monitoring weather updates are strongly advised.
