Severe Heatwave Grips Bihar as Temperatures Soar Above 45°C

Bihar Heatwave: Schools Closed in Patna, Relief Anticipated with Upcoming Monsoon

Patna: Bihar is experiencing an intense heatwave, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for seven districts: Buxar, Bhojpur, Aurangabad, Nawada, Nalanda, Siwan, and Arwal. These areas are bracing for extreme heat conditions, while an orange alert has been declared for Patna, Gaya, Saran, Rohtas, Sheikhpura, Gopalganj, and Vaishali.

The scorching temperatures have already claimed lives. On Tuesday, two individuals succumbed to the heat in Arwal, including a retired teacher. Arwal recorded temperatures above 45°C, while Buxar saw the mercury soar past 46°C.

According to the IMD, the heatwave is expected to persist across much of Bihar from June 11 to June 14. A potential respite is forecast from June 15-16, with the onset of pre-monsoon rains and the arrival of the monsoon season.

On Tuesday, 15 districts, including Patna, Chapra, Sheikhpura, Nawada, and Jamui, experienced heatwave conditions, with temperatures ranging between 40°C and 45°C. The sweltering heat has overwhelmed medical facilities; Arwal’s Sadar Hospital reported a surge in heatwave-related cases, with 500 to 700 patients seeking treatment daily.

Buxar has been the hottest district for three consecutive days, reaching a peak temperature of 46.5°C. In addition, 15 districts reported temperatures exceeding 40°C.

The forecast for June 12 indicates severe heatwave conditions in the south-west and south-central parts of Bihar. June 13 will see the heatwave spreading across Buxar, Bhojpur, Aurangabad, Nawada, Nalanda, Siwan, and Arwal, with temperatures expected to remain high in Patna, Gaya, Saran, Rohtas, Sheikhpura, Gopalganj, and Vaishali. By June 14, the south-west region will continue to experience extreme heat, while hot and humid conditions will prevail in other parts of the state.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has directed the Disaster Management Department and district officials to ensure adequate measures are in place. This includes providing drinking water tankers at key locations, monitoring groundwater levels, and maintaining health services on high alert. The Chief Minister also stressed the need for uninterrupted power supply to help residents cope with the heat.

As Bihar battles this severe heatwave, residents are advised to take precautions, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
