Sheohar Engineering College Student Dies by Suicide in Hostel, Inquiry Underway

Sheohar/Patna: A final-year electrical engineering student at Sheohar Engineering College, died by suicide in her hostel room on Saturday evening, triggering protests among students.

The 22-year-old, a resident of Muzaffarpur’s Kanti area, was found unresponsive in her locked room on the third floor of the girls’ hostel. She had participated in Bihar Diwas celebrations earlier in the day before returning to her hostel. When she failed to respond to repeated knocks, fellow students alerted the college administration. The door was eventually forced open, and she was found dead.

Following the incident, students expressed anger over the delayed arrival of the police, who reached the campus nearly two hours after being informed. The protest intensified as students refused to let authorities remove the body until the student’s family arrived.

Senior officials, including District Magistrate Vivek Ranjan Maitreya and SSP Shailesh Kumar Sinha, later arrived at the scene to investigate. “The body has been sent for post-mortem, and the cause of the suicide remains unclear. Further inquiries are underway,” SSP Sinha said.

The principal of the college, Dr. Keshavendra Chaudhary, confirmed that hostel students had first raised concerns about the locked room. “Upon receiving information, I called the warden and later reached the spot myself. The police were informed, and we are awaiting the family’s arrival,” he said.

The incident has left students in shock, as the deceased was reportedly a promising student nearing the completion of her degree. Police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances leading to her death.
