Patna: A shiny object observed over the past two to three days in Jayanagar in Madhubani, located on the India-Nepal border in Bihar, has been identified as a Starlink satellite, state authorities confirmed on Wednesday. The initial sightings had sparked concern among local residents, with speculation that the object could be a drone.

However, experts clarified that the object is part of the Starlink project, developed by SpaceX, which aims to provide high-speed internet globally. Under this initiative, thousands of small satellites are deployed in low Earth orbit. These satellites often appear in formation soon after launch, creating what is referred to as a “Starlink satellite train”.

These satellite trains are visible from Earth for a few minutes, particularly just after sunset or before sunrise, as they reflect sunlight. Their distinct, slow-moving brightness can cause confusion among observers unfamiliar with the project.

Authorities have urged the public not to panic, reiterating that the sightings are harmless and part of an international telecommunications project.
