Skies Over Patna Set Ablaze by Air Force Stunts Ahead of Vijayotsav Celebration

Patna : The skies above Bihar’s capital erupted into a spectacle of speed, skill and symbolism on Monday, as the Indian Air Force (IAF) rehearsed for one of the most visually arresting air shows the state has ever hosted. Set against the riverfront of JP Ganga Path, nine Hawk jets from the famed Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team carved trails of white, blue, and saffron across the sky in preparation for Vijayotsav – a tribute to freedom fighter Babu Veer Kunwar Singh.
The main event is scheduled for Tuesday, 23 April, with full aerial manoeuvres to run between 10.35am and 12.15pm. Monday’s rehearsal, however, was no less thrilling. Fighter jets flew in tight formations at altitudes of 1,500 feet, executing loops, heart shapes, barrel rolls and the crowd-favourite “bomb burst” – in which aircraft scatter in all directions from a central point.
Adding a poignant dimension to the show, a paragliding unit from the Air Force soared across the Patna skyline bearing the image of Veer Kunwar Singh, who led the rebellion against British rule during the 1857 uprising.
“We want young people to feel the pulse of the Air Force and be inspired to serve the nation,” said BJP MP and show organiser Rajiv Pratap Rudy. “This is a proud moment for Bihar – the first such military tribute approved here since Independence.”
The performance has been hailed as a celebration of both martial heritage and aerial excellence. Over 150 magistrates, 200 police officers, and 1,000 personnel have been deployed to manage crowds and ensure safety. Security has been particularly tight, with JP Ganga Path and surrounding airspace – including drone flights – declared a no-fly zone during the show.
Spectators can expect a tightly choreographed display featuring “Diamond 9” formations and gravity-defying synchronised stunts. The Surya Kiran team, reintroduced in 2015 with upgraded BAE Hawk 132 aircraft, is known for its precision aerobatics and vibrant national colour schemes.
The main viewing point for the air show will be near the Sabhyata Dwar. Roads around the venue will be closed, and designated parking has been arranged at key ghats and approach roads, with detailed traffic diversions in effect for the duration of the event.
This aerial tribute to Veer Kunwar Singh – revered for his role in India’s first war of independence – is expected to draw thousands. For many, it’s not just an air show, but a moment of collective pride as the skies over Patna echo with the roar of history and heroism.
