Smart Meters in Patna to Offer Discounts for Low Supply, No Immediate Power Cut on Low Balance

Electricity Company Server Failure Disrupts Recharge for 18 Lakh Consumers

Patna: In response to growing concerns about smart meters, officials in Patna clarified key features and benefits of the new system. Smart meters, set to be installed in all households by November, aim to offer consumers greater transparency in billing and ensure uninterrupted electricity for up to three days, even if their balance runs out. Additionally, consumers will receive a discount on their bills if the electricity supply falls below 21 hours per day.

Currently, there are 12 lakh electricity consumers in Patna, with smart meters already installed in 7.25 lakh homes. By the end of November, the entire district is expected to be equipped with smart meters. These meters come with a push-button feature that temporarily restores the connection for up to a week, giving consumers time to recharge without facing immediate disconnection.

Patna District Magistrate (DM) Dr. Chandrashekhar addressed concerns regarding higher bills, assuring that the new meters are designed for transparency and to resolve previous issues of inaccurate billing. Unlike the old system, smart meters eliminate the need for manual readings and provide precise data tracking. Complaints about fast-running meters can be verified through random testing at certified labs, ensuring accuracy.

In cases of low balance, power cuts will only occur between 10 am and 2 pm, and a week’s notice will be given before any disconnection. Officials also addressed cyber fraud concerns related to bill payments, advising consumers to use the official BBSM or Suvidha apps instead of third-party payment platforms like Google Pay or UPI to avoid risks.

The new system comes with the added benefit of no monthly fee for the smart meters, which are being installed by France’s EDF and top Indian manufacturers like Genus and L&T. Consumers can recharge any amount based on their usage and track their consumption in real-time through the dedicated app.
