Son of ‘Mountain Man’ Dashrath Manjhi Seeks Congress Ticket to Contest from Bodh Gaya

Bhagirath Manjhi, son of the legendary ‘Mountain Man’ Dashrath Manjhi, has announced his intention to contest the Bihar Assembly elections from Bodh Gaya on a Congress ticket, aiming to carry forward his father’s legacy of social justice.

Bodh Gaya: Bhagirath Manjhi, the son of legendary ‘Mountain Man’ Dashrath Manjhi, has expressed his desire to contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections on a Congress ticket from the Bodh Gaya constituency. Speaking to the media, Bhagirath said his decision is rooted in his commitment to carry forward his father’s legacy of service to the poor and marginalized.

Dashrath Manjhi, famously known as the ‘Mountain Man,’ became a symbol of perseverance and dedication when he single-handedly carved a road through a mountain in Gaya district over 22 years to ensure better access for his village. His story has inspired millions across India and even formed the basis of a Bollywood biopic.

Bhagirath Manjhi said he believes that the Congress party aligns best with his father’s ideals of social justice and upliftment of the underprivileged. He also highlighted the need for stronger representation of the Musahar community—a Dalit group considered among the most marginalized in Bihar.

While he awaits a formal decision from the Congress leadership, Bhagirath is already meeting local party workers and supporters to strengthen his claim. He stated that his candidacy would give voice to those who have long been neglected by the political mainstream.

The Bodh Gaya seat holds symbolic value, not just as a Buddhist pilgrimage centre but also as a constituency with a significant Dalit population.
