Patna: Tensions flared at Bihar Veterinary College on Friday as students staged a protest following a shooting incident that left one of their peers injured. The unrest erupted after a student, Mayank, was shot in the hand during an altercation on Thursday evening at the Veterinary Ground, located in the Patna Airport police station jurisdiction.
According to police, the confrontation occurred while students were playing in the ground, leading to gunfire. Mayank was immediately taken to a private hospital by friends and is currently receiving treatment.
The incident has sparked outrage among students, who gathered on campus Friday morning, voicing concerns over the lack of security. Protesters, including several female students, said the administration had ignored repeated complaints of harassment and threats.
“There is no security system on campus. Women face harassment even during the day, but no action is taken,” said one student. “There are no CCTV cameras, and this has made the situation more dangerous.”
Students also alleged that threats had been made earlier in the week. “Four days ago, a youth named Kartik threatened us. And now, our classmates Shivam and Prince were reportedly targeted by the same trainer who fired on Thursday,” another student claimed.
Patna police have taken one suspect, Nayaz alias Gulab, into custody for questioning. According to his family, he was preparing for the Bihar Police recruitment exams and regularly visited the ground for training. They denied his involvement in the shooting, instead pointing to an ongoing dispute between a physical trainer and veterinary students.
