Teachers Involved in Local Politics or Skipping School to Face Action in Bihar

Patna: Teachers in Bihar who engage in local politics or leave school after marking attendance will face disciplinary action, the state’s Education Department has warned.

In a letter issued to all District Education Officers (DEOs), Additional Chief Secretary of the Education Department, Dr S Siddharth, directed immediate identification and suspension of such teachers. The move follows surprise inspections conducted on April 28, during which some educators were found to be leaving school premises after signing in, while others were allegedly participating in local political activities.

The department called these acts a serious breach of duty, equating early departures with fraudulent behaviour against the state. “If a teacher marks attendance and then leaves, it constitutes a case of deception,” the letter stated.

The inspections were prompted by confidential complaints from various districts. Some teachers living near their schools were reportedly seen arriving only to log attendance before departing for the day. In addition, involvement in local politics by a few educators raised red flags.

The DEOs have now been instructed to initiate departmental proceedings, including suspension, against those found guilty of either offence.
