Patna: Bihar’s energy sector is witnessing a quiet transformation powered by cutting-edge technology, with the state moving swiftly toward self-reliance and sustainable growth, Energy Secretary Pankaj Kumar Pal said on the occasion of National Technology Day.
In a statement issued to mark the day, Pal credited a series of advanced innovations for revolutionising power distribution and management in the state, noting that the Energy Department’s adoption of systems such as GIS switchgear, substation automation, monopole transmission towers, automated system balancing mechanisms, and smart prepaid meters had dramatically improved the efficiency, transparency and safety of Bihar’s electricity infrastructure.
“These technologies have allowed us to deliver energy that is safe, efficient and more consumer-friendly,” Pal said, adding that Bihar is now at the forefront of digital integration in power services.
Among the key upgrades is the use of GIS (Gas-Insulated Switchgear), which enables high-efficiency transmission on a smaller land footprint. Paired with Substation Automation Systems (SAS), it has allowed real-time monitoring of grid substations across the state—both locally and remotely—strengthening transparency and cyber-security in operations.
The installation of monopole towers has accelerated transmission projects, particularly in congested urban areas, while automated system balancing mechanisms (ASBM) are now maintaining load-generation equilibrium autonomously, boosting grid stability.
Pal highlighted the importance of the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC), calling it the “nerve centre” of Bihar’s power infrastructure. The SLDC ensures a continuous balance between supply and demand, allowing for a more stable energy network across the state.
Consumer-facing technologies have also seen major upgrades. With smart prepaid metering, users now have direct control over consumption and can track usage in real time. Digital payment systems, supported by a newly developed mobile app, allow consumers to pay bills, apply for new connections, request load changes and even report power theft—all online.
The state is also experimenting with solar power storage solutions, including a 301 MW solar project in Kajra equipped with 495 MWh battery storage, aimed at enhancing renewable energy reliability. In parallel, Bihar is promoting “fish below, electricity above” solar projects, an innovative dual-use model that enables fish farming under elevated solar panels.
In a further step towards consumer satisfaction, an integrated Omni CRM platform for addressing customer grievances is set to go live this month.
“Electricity has now become accessible, affordable and reliable from villages to cities,” said Pal. “Technology is not only helping us deliver power—it’s laying the groundwork for a self-reliant, sustainable and inclusive Bihar.”
