Thundershowers Cool Bihar, But Lightning and Crop Damage Raise Alarm

Unseasonal thundershowers brought relief from the April heat in Bihar but left behind a trail of concern, with 22 lightning-related deaths in 24 hours and widespread damage to standing Rabi and fruit crops.

Patna: Unseasonal rains across Bihar brought welcome relief from the scorching April heat on Thursday, as thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds lashed several parts of the state. Patna, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, West Champaran, Purnia and Vaishali were among the districts that witnessed varying intensities of rainfall — from heavy downpours to light drizzles.

While residents enjoyed the sudden change in weather, the rains have raised fresh concerns for farmers. With the Rabi crop nearly ready for harvest, agricultural experts warn that heavy showers at this stage could lead to significant damage. Strong winds have also affected mango and litchi orchards, key seasonal produce for the region.

Thundershowers Cool Bihar, But Lightning and Crop Damage Raise Alarm

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast of rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in eight districts until April 12. The Disaster Management Department has urged the public to exercise caution, particularly in rural areas where open-field activities increase vulnerability to lightning strikes.

Tragically, at least 22 people have lost their lives in the last 24 hours due to lightning incidents reported in Begusarai, Madhubani, Darbhanga and other parts of the state.

Authorities have appealed to farmers to remain vigilant and avoid working in open fields during adverse weather conditions. The IMD and state officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
