Buxar: Two people have died after a vehicle broke through the railing of the old Ganga bridge in Buxar, Bihar, and plunged into the river on Friday night. Emergency services are continuing to search the waters for other possible victims.
The accident occurred around 8.30pm when a Scorpio SUV reportedly lost control and crashed through a section of the bridge’s metal barrier before falling into the river below. The bodies of two men – identified as Arjun, also known as Jhamu Singh, and Harsh Kumar – have been recovered.
City police station in-charge, Manoj Kumar Singh, confirmed that the vehicle was retrieved from the river early Saturday, along with Harsh’s body. Arjun’s body had been found around 1am, several hours after the incident.
“There is still no clarity on how many people were in the vehicle at the time of the accident,” Singh said. “The search operation is ongoing.”
Both airbags in the SUV had deployed, police said, suggesting the impact was forceful. A considerable stretch of the bridge’s railing was damaged in the collision.
The bodies have been sent for postmortem examinations. Family members of the deceased were seen grieving at the scene, while large crowds gathered near the bridge after news of the incident spread.
