UNDP India Supports Transgender Community with Certificate Camp in Patna
Patna: A Transgender Identity Certificate Camp was organized at Gandhi High School Campus in Khagaul on Friday, to support the transgender community. The event was inaugurated by Isabelle Tschan, Country Director of UNDP India, alongside Dr. Chiranjeevi Bhattacharya, National Program Officer of UNDP India, and Special Officer Sujata Raj from the Social Welfare Department.
The camp saw the participation of 70 transgender individuals, 31 of whom applied for their transgender certificates. These applications have been forwarded for the necessary action. Addressing the challenges faced in obtaining these certificates, Sujata Raj assured full cooperation from the Social Welfare Department. Isabelle echoed this commitment, emphasizing continuous support to ensure the easy availability of transgender identity certificates.
Dr. Chiranjeevi Bhattacharya coordinated and led the entire program. Reshma Prasad commended UNDP India for its crucial role in establishing transgender identity across the country, noting that UNDP has been advocating for the rights and freedoms of the transgender community since 2008. Prasad highlighted the significance of easing the process so that every transgender person can obtain an identity certificate.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks from Anupriya Singh. Three individuals were honored with the Pillar Award for their unwavering support to the transgender community: Sister Celine, Head of the History Department at Patna Women’s College, Babita, and Dev Priya Dutta, all recognized for their efforts through the organization DostanaSafar.
Prominent attendees included Bhanu Kumar, Sarwan Kumar, Rani Tiwari, Kusum, Kabir, Ashu, Neha Yadav, and Abhinav Kumar.
