Bihar to Get Greenfield Airports, Expansion of Patna and Bihta Airports Underway

Government Push for Aviation Infrastructure in Bihar

New Delhi/ Patna: In a significant boost to Bihar’s aviation sector, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in her budget speech on Saturday that greenfield airports will be developed in the state. The move aims to enhance regional connectivity and cater to future transportation demands.

“Greenfield airports will be facilitated in Bihar to meet the future needs of the state. These will be in addition to the expansion of the capacity of Patna airport and a brownfield airport at Bihta,” Sitharaman stated.

Greenfield Airport Proposals in Bihar

While specific locations for the new greenfield airports are yet to be disclosed, the initiative aligns with Bihar’s increasing air travel demand. The state government has previously proposed new airports in cities such as Purnia, Raxaul, and Gaya to enhance air connectivity across different regions. The new greenfield airports are expected to:

  • Improve connectivity for remote and underdeveloped areas.
  • Boost trade and tourism, particularly in regions like Bodh Gaya.
  • Reduce air traffic burden on existing airports.

Expansion of Patna Airport

The Jaya Prakash Narayan International Airport in Patna, one of the busiest airports in eastern India, is currently undergoing a major expansion. The new terminal building is likely to be inaugurated in April. The key developments include:

  • A new terminal building, expected to handle 4.5 million passengers annually.
  • Enhanced runway and apron facilities to accommodate more aircraft.
  • Upgraded passenger amenities for smoother travel experiences.

The expansion will increase flight capacity and improve air travel for both domestic and international passengers.

Development of Civil Enclave at Bihta Airbase

As part of Bihar’s aviation infrastructure upgrade, a civil enclave is being developed at the Bihta Air Force Station, located about 40 km from Patna. The Bihta Airport project includes:

  • A new integrated terminal building covering 66,000 sq. meters.
  • Capacity to handle 3,000 passengers per hour and 5 million annually.
  • 10 parking bays for large aircraft like A-321 and B-737-800.
  • Two link taxiways to ensure smooth aircraft movement.

This project is aimed at reducing congestion at Patna Airport and providing an alternative air travel hub for the region.
