Vehicle Owners in Bihar Must Update Contact Details or Face Penalties, Says Transport Secretary

Patna: Bihar’s Transport Department has mandated that all vehicle owners and drivers update the mobile number and address registered with their vehicle and driving license within one month. Failure to comply will result in fines, and the license or vehicle registration of non-compliant individuals may be suspended. To assist the public, a help desk number has been provided.
In a departmental review, the Transport Secretary Sanjay Kumar Agarwal instructed all District Transport Officers to ensure up-to-date contact information for vehicle owners and drivers. Many have outdated mobile numbers linked to their registrations, complicating identification during accidents or other incidents and hindering the delivery of e-challans and traffic violation notifications.
According to Section 49 of the Motor Vehicles Act, vehicle owners must inform authorities of address changes within 30 days, or face penalties. To update mobile numbers, users need to provide the number linked to their Aadhaar. Updates can be made on the Transport Service Portal, and failure to do so will prevent the issuance of pollution certificates.
The Transport Secretary highlighted the persistent issue of outdated contact information causing difficulties in emergency identification and e-challan delivery. Vehicle owners and drivers are urged to update their details on the Vahan and Sarathi portals.
