Patna: A free Vitamin D testing and awareness camp was held today at Dr Diwakar Tejaswi Clinic in Lohianagar, Kankarbagh, as part of a public health initiative by Public Awareness for Healthy Approach for Living (PAHAL). The campaign aimed to raise awareness about the rising issue of Vitamin D deficiency, particularly in urban populations.
Dr Diwakar Tejaswi, Medical Director of PAHAL and a senior physician, emphasised the broader health implications of low Vitamin D levels. “Vitamin D is not only essential for bone health,” he said, “but it also plays a vital role in boosting immunity, reducing inflammation, preventing heart disease, and supporting mental well-being.”
He noted that adequate Vitamin D levels can help slow the progression of autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and lupus. Additionally, sufficient levels have been linked to reduced risks of type 2 diabetes, depression, anxiety, dementia, and Alzheimer’s.
Dr Tejaswi warned that the deficiency, increasingly common due to modern urban lifestyles, lack of sun exposure, and poor dietary habits, is contributing to a host of health issues including rickets in children, osteomalacia in adults, and osteoporosis in the elderly.
To combat the deficiency, he advised spending 20 to 30 minutes in sunlight daily, particularly in the morning or evening, and incorporating Vitamin D-rich foods such as eggs, fish, dairy, and mushrooms. He also recommended supplements where necessary, under medical supervision.
Over 100 people attended the camp, receiving free tests and personalised consultations based on their results. The initiative was well-received by local residents and hailed as a much-needed step towards preventive healthcare in the community.
The event, organised by PAHAL and led by Dr Tejaswi, underscored the growing need for routine Vitamin D checks, especially for those experiencing symptoms like fatigue, frequent illness, joint pain, and poor sleep.
