When Will Patna’s Women-Only Buses Start Running—and What Can Commuters Expect?

Patna: Patna is set to welcome its first fleet of women-only ‘Pink Buses’ in early June, as part of a Bihar government initiative to improve safety and accessibility in public transport for women.

Announced in the 2025-26 state budget, the pink bus scheme is being expedited by the Transport Department, with the service initially launching in Patna, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur and Purnia. If successful, it could be expanded to other urban centres in the state.

The buses, to be staffed entirely by female drivers and conductors, will serve routes that pass through high-footfall zones such as schools, colleges, hospitals and railway stations—areas frequented by working women and students.

In addition to an all-women crew, each vehicle will be fitted with GPS tracking, an onboard audio system, and integrated coordination with local police and traffic control to ensure secure and comfortable travel. Services will run from 8am to 8pm, with fares kept affordable to encourage wider usage.

The move comes as part of the Nitish Kumar government’s broader efforts to promote gender-inclusive urban mobility. Officials say the scheme not only addresses safety concerns but also aims to boost women’s participation in the workforce by easing daily commutes.

“This initiative reflects the state’s commitment to making public spaces safer and more accessible for women,” a senior official said.
