Why is There Confusion About Holi 2025 Dates?

Patna: This year, confusion has arisen regarding the exact date of Holi celebrations. According to the Mithila and Banaras Panchang, Holika Dahan will take place on Thursday, March 13, while the festival of colors, Holi, will be celebrated on Saturday, March 15.
The reason behind this variation is the occurrence of Falgun Purnima (full moon) over two days. The Falgun Purnima fast falls on March 13, while the full moon for bathing and donation rituals extends to March 14. Due to this, Holika Dahan is scheduled for the night of March 13, and Holi will be observed on March 15, a day after the rituals.
Auspicious Timings for Holika Dahan
Astrologer Acharya Pandit Rakesh Jha, citing Panchang calculations, explained that the presence of Purnima Tithi, the end of Bhadra, and night-time are essential for conducting Holika Dahan rituals.
- Purnima Tithi Begins: March 13, 10:11 AM
- Bhadra Begins: March 13, 10:11 AM
- Bhadra Ends: March 13, 10:47 PM
- Purnima Tithi Ends: March 14, 11:22 PM
Since Holika Dahan should not be performed during Bhadra, it will be done after 10:47 PM on March 13, under the influence of Uttara Phalguni Nakshatra.
On March 14, the full moon at sunrise signifies an auspicious time for rituals, including offerings of sindoor (vermilion) to Kuldevta and donation activities.
