Workshop on National Press Day Highlights the Role of Media in Democracy at Patna

Patna: The Department of Information and Public Relations, Bihar, organised a workshop on the occasion of National Press Day, emphasising the pivotal role of media in sustaining democracy. The event was presided over by Maheshwar Hazari, Minister of the Department, who underscored the indispensability of the press as the fourth pillar of democracy.
In his address, Hazari highlighted the importance of balancing press freedom with responsibility, particularly in the digital age, where the authenticity of information is increasingly challenged. He praised Bihar’s rich journalistic legacy and commended the contribution of journalists who have amplified marginalised voices while upholding integrity.
The Minister also outlined state initiatives like the Patrakar Kalyan Yojana, aimed at providing economic and social security to journalists and their families. He emphasised the significance of establishing journalism and media studies institutes in various districts to equip the youth with modern journalistic skills.
The workshop further delved into the media’s critical role in disseminating government policies and achievements. Hazari applauded journalists for promoting awareness about major state initiatives, including Saat Nischay, tap water schemes, and road connectivity projects. He credited the media with fostering transparency and raising awareness about education and development throughout Bihar.
Representatives from leading media organisations addressed the challenges faced by journalism in the digital age, including the proliferation of fake news. In his welcome speech, Sanjay Krishna, Additional Secretary of the department, urged media professionals to combat misinformation and prioritise accurate reporting.
The event concluded with the recognition of distinguished media professionals for their contributions to journalism. Senior officials, including Vidhu Bhushan Chaudhary, Ravi Bhushan Sahay, and Neena Jha, along with departmental staff, reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening journalism’s role as a cornerstone of democracy.
