Patna: Air pollution levels in Patna continue to deteriorate despite ongoing efforts by the administration. On Saturday, Gandhi Maidan and surrounding areas recorded a hazardous Air Quality Index (AQI) of 415, a level categorized as “serious” and dangerous for human health. This marks the second time in recent weeks that pollution in the area has reached such alarming levels.

The deteriorating air quality has led to a surge in breathing problems, allergies, and other health complications, particularly in densely populated areas like Sheikhpura, Danapur, Taramandal, and Rajvanshinagar, where AQI levels also remain concerning.

According to Dr. DK Shukla, Chairman of the Bihar State Pollution Control Board, the ongoing fairs at Gandhi Maidan have significantly increased human activity and vehicular movement, causing a rise in dust particles. Additionally, the humidity in the atmosphere has created a layer of dust and moisture, further worsening the situation. Dr. Shukla stated that this layer can only disperse with strong winds.

The Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has intensified efforts to combat pollution. Currently, water is being sprayed on city roads using 20 tankers to control dust. Furthermore, strict action is being taken against construction agencies that fail to adhere to pollution control norms.

Current Air Pollution Status in Patna (AQI):

– Gandhi Maidan: 415 (Serious)
– Sheikhpura: 315 (Very Bad)
– Patna City: 277 (Bad)
– Rajvanshinagar: 230 (Moderate)

Air Quality Standards:

– 0-50: Good
– 51-100: Satisfactory
– 101-200: Moderate
– 201-300: Bad
– 301-400: Very Bad
– Above 400: Serious/Dangerous

Adding to the environmental distress, the city is experiencing a severe cold wave due to westerly winds over the last three days. The plummeting temperatures have disrupted normal life, with fewer vehicles seen on the roads as people opt to stay indoors to avoid the chilling cold.

Caption:
Patna district administration has intensified its enforcement of fire safety regulations, ordering the sealing of six hotels and commercial establishments found non-compliant with mandatory fire safety norms despite repeated notices. The action comes following extensive fire audits conducted under the direction of the District Magistrate, who emphasized that public safety remains the administration’s top priority.
Authorities have also proposed sealing six hospitals, including major healthcare facilities in Kankarbagh, Rajendra Nagar, Ramakrishna Nagar, and Patna City, after serious fire safety deficiencies reportedly remained unaddressed.
Over the past four days, more than 470 buildings, hospitals, hotels, malls, apartments, banks, and commercial establishments have undergone fire safety audits across the district. Officials stated that regular mock drills and awareness programmes are also being conducted to strengthen emergency preparedness.
Additionally, 72 other hotels and hospitals have been issued final notices and have been given 10 days to comply with fire safety standards. Failure to do so may result in sealing and further legal action.
