Patna: As the year 2024 draws to a close, Bihar witnessed several tragic incidents that grabbed national headlines. From bridge collapses to rail accidents, and bomb explosions to devastating floods, the state faced immense challenges. Many of these incidents triggered widespread criticism of the Nitish Kumar-led government. Here’s a recap of the major events that marked the year:

Bridge Collapses in Bihar

Bridge Collapses in Bihar

Starting in June, a spate of bridge collapses plagued Bihar, with over 15 bridges collapsing within three months. Districts like Siwan, Saran, Madhubani, Araria, East Champaran, and Kishanganj were severely affected, mainly due to heavy rains.
More than a dozen engineers were suspended for negligence, while the opposition launched protests targeting the state government. The issue highlighted serious flaws in infrastructure and maintenance policies.

Conspiracies to Derail Trains

On October 9, a stone was placed on the tracks near Neyamatpur Halt on the Patna-Gaya rail section, targeting the Islampur-Hatia Express. The loco pilot’s timely emergency brakes averted a major accident.

Conspiracies to Derail Trains

Similarly, on October 22, two iron rods were placed on tracks near Ranipatara on the Purnia-Katihar rail section. Quick action by the driver prevented a disaster. Both incidents underscored security concerns for railway passengers.

Rail Accidents and Mishaps

On September 21, the engine of the Muzaffarpur-Pune Special train derailed on the shunting line at Muzaffarpur Junction, causing delays and chaos. The driver was found guilty and suspended.

Rail Accidents and Mishaps

In another incident on December 18, a fire broke out in the general bogie of the Patna-Bandra Superfast Express near Dumraon. Though there were no casualties, the train was delayed by three hours as the fire brigade doused the flames.
Additionally, a freight train split into two parts on December 14 near Kharia Pipra Halt on the Bhagalpur Jamalpur-Kiul section. The coupling failure could have derailed the train but was averted due to the crew’s alertness.

Stampede at Baba Siddheshwar Nath Temple

On August 12, during the fourth Monday of Sawan, eight devotees, including seven women, died in a stampede at the Baba Siddheshwar Nath temple complex in Jehanabad. Over two dozen people were injured as the crowd overwhelmed the temple premises.
Compensation was announced for the victims’ families, and some officials were suspended following the incident.

Chhapra Balcony Collapse Injures 100

A tragic incident occurred in Chhapra on September 3 when a balcony collapsed during an orchestra event. About 100 people sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. The accident raised questions about safety measures at public events.

Bomb Blasts in Gaya

Bomb Blasts in Gaya

Two bombs exploded on November 27 in a garbage heap in Domtoli, Gaya. Teenagers Laxman Kumar and Badal Kumar, who were picking garbage, were injured. A third bomb was defused. The explosions caused panic in the locality, and investigations were launched.

Floods and Drownings Across Bihar

Floods and Drownings Across Bihar

Floods wreaked havoc across Bihar, with several districts witnessing loss of lives. On September 25 alone, 29 people drowned in floodwaters across various districts.
The deceased included seven from Munger, six from East Champaran, five from Bhagalpur, three from Bihar Sharif, two each from Vaishali, Madhepura, and West Champaran, and one each from Lakhisarai and Katihar. Rescue teams managed to save eight individuals.

Bihar’s series of unfortunate events this year have drawn attention to infrastructure issues, public safety, and disaster management, sparking demands for stronger policies and governance.
