Sabour: The Agricultural Extension Service of Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour, has marked a transformative year in 2024, achieving significant milestones in agricultural innovation and farmer empowerment. Under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Dr. D.R. Singh, the university has spearheaded initiatives aimed at modernizing agriculture and uplifting rural communities across the state.
Driving Innovation Through Events and Publications
The year began with the university hosting a Kisan Mela under the theme “Atmanirbhar Kisan with Technical Farming.” The event attracted over 30,000 farmers, with awards presented to outstanding farmers from 25 districts, encouraging innovation and progressive farming techniques.
In a national-level event, GIITAS-2024 (Grassroots Innovation and Innovators in Transforming Agri-food Systems), over 300 farmers shared cutting-edge agricultural practices. A multilingual book, Unnat Kisan: Innovation in Agri-Food System, was also unveiled, serving as a comprehensive guide for agricultural advancement.
Modern Technologies Transforming Farming Practices
The university has made strides in implementing modern crop protection techniques across 5,620 hectares of farmland and enhancing yields through moisture conservation on 400 hectares. Farmers benefited from the distribution of 2,800 quintals of certified seeds, improving Rabi crop productivity.
In a state-first initiative, the Drone Operator Training Program trained young farmers in using drones for agricultural tasks, making farming more efficient and opening new avenues of employment.
Promoting Sustainable and Organic Farming
Recognizing the importance of organic farming, BAU established 356 large model plots to train farmers in eco-friendly practices. Simultaneously, 134 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) received technical support to enhance local-level production and marketing capabilities.
Innovative Outreach Through Technology
The university introduced four high-tech Krishi Gyan Vahans, which now travel across Bihar, delivering practical demonstrations and insights into modern agricultural tools and techniques. ICT-based initiatives have also proven transformative, with farmers increasingly turning to social media for advice and guidance. The university’s media centre-produced agricultural films have become highly popular, complemented by community radio broadcasts.
Skill Development for Rural Empowerment
BAU’s efforts in skill development have trained hundreds of youth under programs like Kisan Drone Operator and Skill Development Training, enabling them to translate knowledge into employment opportunities and enhanced productivity.
Recognition for Excellence in Agricultural Extension
Vice-Chancellor Dr. D.R. Singh highlighted the University’s mission to strengthen farmers’ economic conditions through modern technologies and scientific research. “Our efforts reflect the trust and active participation of farmers,” he said.
Dr. R.K. Sohane, Director of Extension Education, described 2024 as a landmark year. “We have set new standards in agricultural extension while empowering farmers technically. Our commitment to sustainable agriculture and farmer welfare remains unwavering,” he stated.
BAU’s advanced extension model, featuring ICT and community-driven initiatives, has drawn national recognition as a leading example of agricultural innovation.
