Patna: The cost of constructing the subway near Patna Junction has been proposed to rise to Rs 115 crore, a significant increase from its initial budget of Rs 68.85 crore. The revised estimate, prepared by the Bridge Construction Corporation, is yet to be approved by the Patna Smart City Board, which will make the final decision following an investigation into the matter.
Designed to modernize and streamline access to the railway station, the 440-meter-long subway includes a 110-meter underground section where pedestrian tracks are already being installed. The construction, part of the Patna Smart City initiative, has faced two significant cost escalations—first to ₹84.83 crore and now to the proposed Rs 115 crore.
Three Entry and Exit Points Planned
In a bid to enhance convenience, the subway will now feature three entry and exit points. These will be located at the Multi-Modal Hub, Buddha Smriti Park, and the proposed metro station. Officials have confirmed that most of the civil work for the subway is complete, with finishing touches underway.
Completion Delayed to April
Initially slated for completion between December and January, the project has encountered delays, with the new deadline now set for March or April. The delay comes amid additional features being incorporated into the design. Pedestrian tracks have been ordered, and their installation is expected to begin soon.
Connecting to the Multi-Modal Hub
The subway will be integrated with a Multi-Modal Hub, which is nearing completion at a cost of Rs 65.81 crore. This hub will provide passengers access to a range of public transport options, including buses, taxis, and auto-rickshaws. According to officials, most of the hub’s construction has been finalized by the Bihar State Building Construction Corporation Limited (BSBCCL).
Modern Amenities in the Subway
The subway will be equipped with modern facilities such as lighting, CCTV cameras, and six kiosks offering utilities for commuters. These kiosks will provide services like cafeterias, ATMs, and retail shops. The aim is to ensure that the subway is a safe, convenient, and user-friendly space for residents and visitors alike.
Rising Costs Due to Project Modifications
Officials attribute the rising costs to three significant changes made to the original project design. These modifications include the addition of the metro station gate and upgrades to ensure the subway is equipped with modern amenities.
As the Patna Smart City Board deliberates on the revised budget, questions remain about the management of escalating costs and delays. However, with construction progressing steadily, the project promises to transform connectivity and urban mobility in the region once completed.
