Patna: Five years after the Covid-19 pandemic, a new virus, HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus), has emerged in China, causing concern. On January 6, six cases of HMPV were reported in India. HMPV is a common respiratory virus with symptoms similar to Covid-19, including fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.
The Bihar government has issued an advisory to all district administrations to be vigilant and prepare for potential outbreaks.
The Health Department Secretary, Sanjay Kumar Singh, instructed officials to be cautious and ensure adequate treatment facilities in hospitals. The advisory also includes the establishment of “flu corners” in hospitals if cases increase.
HMPV, first discovered in the Netherlands in 2001, spreads through respiratory droplets and contact with contaminated surfaces.
There is currently no specific treatment or vaccine for HMPV, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms.
The Bihar government has issued guidelines for hospitals, including ensuring the availability of Covid-19-related medicines, kits, and equipment.
Hospitals are advised to enhance their capacity to treat respiratory and fever patients and train healthcare workers on HMPV prevention.
The six reported cases in India include an eight-month-old baby in Bengaluru, a three-month-old baby girl in Bengaluru, a two-month-old baby in Ahmedabad, a five-month-old baby in Kolkata, and two babies in Chennai.
