AIIMS Patna Expands Cochlear Implant Services to Elderly Patients to Improve Hearing Loss Treatment

Patna: The ENT department at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Patna, is expanding its cochlear implant services to include elderly patients. Previously, the institute primarily focused on implanting cochlear devices in children. This expansion will provide crucial access to advanced hearing restoration technology for older individuals experiencing hearing loss.

Cochlear implants are electronic devices that directly stimulate the auditory nerve, bypassing damaged parts of the ear to restore hearing. While most implants are currently performed on children under five years of age, AIIMS, Patna, is now preparing to offer this life-changing technology to older patients as well.

This development will significantly benefit elderly patients suffering from hearing loss due to various factors such as age-related decline, infections, or injuries. By providing access to advanced treatment options within the institute, AIIMS aims to improve the quality of life for individuals with hearing impairments.

The ENT department at AIIMS, Patna, has a successful track record of performing cochlear implants in children, with over five dozen children having benefited from the procedure. The institute’s expansion of cochlear implant services to the elderly population marks a significant step forward in improving access to advanced healthcare in the region.
