Bihar Agricultural University Identifies 26 Geographical Indications for Registration in Sabour

Sabour: In a significant move to protect the unique agricultural and horticultural products of Bihar, the 7th Review Meeting on Geographical Indications (GIs) was held at the Directorate of Research, Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour. The meeting, chaired by Vice Chancellor Dr. D.R. Singh and coordinated by Dr. Anil Kumar Singh, Director, Research at BAU, focused on the progress of 31 identified GIs. It was resolved to move forward with the registration of 26 GIs, ensuring legal protection for these distinctive products. A second-phase action plan was also developed for 25 new GIs, which will be submitted for registration soon.

The meeting brought together GI leaders, key stakeholders including District Development Manager (DDM) NABARD, Bhagalpur, Chandan Kumar, and Deputy Director, Horticulture, Bameti, Patna. These experts emphasized the vast economic potential GIs hold in promoting regional products and improving the livelihoods of local farmers.

Dr. D.R. Singh underlined the strategic importance of registering GIs for safeguarding the heritage and distinctiveness of Bihar’s traditional products. He noted that obtaining the GI tag will not only increase global recognition of Bihar’s products but also encourage rural prosperity and sustainable economic development.

Dr. A.K. Singh reiterated the university’s commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration with stakeholders to promote these products. He also mentioned that the GI list reflects Bihar’s rich agricultural diversity and cultural heritage. Additionally, discussions were held to improve market accessibility for these local agricultural products.

The meeting concluded with the adoption of a comprehensive roadmap for accelerating the GI registration process, ensuring strong inter-agency coordination and timely implementation, further solidifying BAU’s role in positioning Bihar as a leader in agricultural excellence and innovation.
