Bihar To Get Dedicated Makhana Board, Announces FM Sitharaman
Government Initiative to Boost Makhana Sector
New Delhi/ Patna: In a significant move to bolster Bihar’s agricultural sector, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the establishment of a Makhana Board in the state during her budget speech on Saturday. This initiative aims to enhance the production, processing, value addition, and marketing of makhana, a renowned ‘superfood’ from Bihar.
“Acknowledging a special opportunity for the people of Bihar, a Makhana Board will be established in the state to improve production, processing, value addition, and marketing of makhana. The people engaged in these activities will be organized into Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). The Board will provide handholding and training support to makhana farmers and will also work to ensure they receive the benefits of all relevant Government schemes,” said the Finance Minister.
Bihar: The Hub of Makhana Production
Makhana, also known as fox nut, is an aquatic crop predominantly cultivated in the Mithila region of Bihar. The state stands as the largest producer of makhana in India, with districts like Darbhanga, Madhubani, Purnea, Katihar, Araria, Saharsa, and Supaul being major cultivation hubs. Traditionally, makhana farming has been a significant source of livelihood for many families in these areas.
The Traditional and Labor-Intensive Cultivation Process
The cultivation process involves harvesting seeds from the water, followed by cleaning, drying, and roasting to produce the edible puffed makhana. This labor-intensive process has remained largely traditional, with minimal technological intervention.
Growing Demand for Makhana and Its Health Benefits
In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of makhana’s health benefits, leading to increased demand both domestically and internationally. Makhana is:
- Rich in protein and low in fat
- Gluten-free, making it an excellent alternative for those with dietary restrictions
- Packed with antioxidants, aiding in anti-aging and overall health
- Known to support heart health and weight management
With its nutritional value gaining attention, makhana has found a place in the global healthy snack industry, further increasing its market potential.
How the Makhana Board Will Help Farmers
The Makhana Board is expected to address several challenges faced by farmers, including:
- Modernization of processing techniques
- Enhancement of value-added products
- Effective marketing strategies
- Organizing farmers into FPOs to improve resource access and income levels
By streamlining these aspects, the Board aims to improve income levels and ensure sustainable growth in the sector.
Strengthening Bihar’s Economy and Global Market Presence
This initiative aligns with the government’s broader objective of promoting agricultural clusters and enhancing the export potential of unique regional products. With proper support and infrastructure, Bihar’s makhana industry is poised for significant advancements, contributing to the state’s economic development and reinforcing its position in the global market.
The move has been welcomed by stakeholders, who believe that the Makhana Board will empower farmers and boost Bihar’s agricultural economy in the long run.
