Tejashwi Yadav Demands Special Status for Bihar and Caste Census in Country

Patna: Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, accompanied by several ministers, addressed the media in a press conference on Thursday, highlighting the government’s stance on the caste census and the pursuit of special category status for Bihar. Describing these efforts as significant achievements, Deputy CM Tejashwi emphasized the importance of the Center granting special status to expedite development initiatives in Bihar.

Tejashwi referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to providing special status to Bihar, citing the state’s role in setting a precedent for the country. He detailed the demand for a nationwide caste census, stating that after meeting with all party leaders, Bihar took the initiative to conduct the census, releasing the figures on October 2.

Tejashwi underscored the scientific basis of Bihar’s caste survey, emphasizing that the government represents the interests of the poor across all castes. With poverty evident in various communities, including SC, ST, OBC, EBC, and the upper caste, he noted that the state’s reservation has reached 75%. Tejashwi announced a financial assistance program of Rs2 lakh per family from the economically weaker section.

Addressing the delay in implementing benefits based on the caste census, Tejashwi explained the decision to include reservation in the Ninth Schedule, urging the Central Government to expedite the process without unnecessary delays.

Responding to questions raised by the Bihar BJP on special status, Tejashwi questioned whether PM Modi had committed to providing this status. He emphasized the need for at least a financial package if special status is not feasible.

Finance minister Vijay Chaudhary echoed this claim, urging a reconsideration of the current 50-50 ratio between the Center and the State.

Chaudhary advocated for an amendment to the Constitution, proposing the inclusion of increased reservations in the Ninth Schedule to prevent unnecessary legal complications. He cited the historical significance of the Ninth Schedule, emphasizing its role in enacting progressive laws.

Tejashwi and the ministers concluded the press conference by urging the Government of India to take proactive measures, amending the Constitution to include Bihar’s demands in the Ninth Schedule, ensuring justice for both the upper castes and the economically disadvantaged without prolonged legal disputes.
