Patna : The Central has given the green light to the Gorakhpur-Siliguri six-lane Greenfield Expressway, a project expected to significantly improve Bihar’s infrastructure and transport network. Of the 568 km expressway, 73%—or 417 km—will pass through Bihar, benefiting eight districts and improving connectivity with the Northeast and major cities such as Delhi.

Key route through Bihar
The expressway will run through West Champaran, East Champaran, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, and Kishanganj districts. As part of the project, several bridges will be built over the Gandak, Bagmati, and Kosi rivers, strengthening year-round connectivity, particularly in flood-prone areas.

Investment and economic impact
The project is expected to cost Rs38,645 crore, with Bihar’s share amounting to Rs27,552 crore. Designed for speeds of up to 120 km/h, the expressway will cut travel times and boost the logistics sector. Officials believe it will provide a significant economic lift by facilitating trade, tourism, and industrial growth in the state.

Bihar’s Road Construction Minister, Nitin Nabin, hailed the approval as a “historic achievement” and thanked the central government for its support. “This expressway will not only extend Bihar’s national highway network but also accelerate economic development,” he said.

Faster travel, stronger infrastructure once completed, the expressway will provide a direct high-speed corridor from North Bihar to West Bengal, the Northeast, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi.
Reduce travel times with speeds of up to 120 km/h, saving both time and fuel.
Strengthen Bihar’s road network with durable bridges and roads in flood-affected regions, ensuring all-weather connectivity.
