Woman Dies by Suicide Over Husband’s Delay on Wedding Anniversary

Bhagalpur: A tragic incident unfolded in Chhint Raghopur village of Gosaindaspur Panchayat, Nathnagar, where a woman died by suicide after her husband failed to reach home on time for their first wedding anniversary. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, and police were informed three hours later.
Upon receiving the report, local police and a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team reached the spot, collected evidence, and initiated an investigation.
What Happened?
The deceased, Rupa Kumari, had married Mithun Mandal on March 12 last year. According to sources, Rupa had asked her husband to be home by midnight to celebrate their anniversary. However, when Mithun arrived after 12 AM, she allegedly took the extreme step in anger.
Husband’s Statement
Mithun, who works as a driver for a marketing officer, stated that he had gone to Ajmeripur Bairiya to witness a Yagya (religious ritual). As a result, he was delayed in returning home despite Rupa’s repeated calls.
“When I reached home late at night, I saw that the door was closed. Not wanting to disturb anyone, I slept in the bathroom,” he told the police.
The next morning, at around 6 AM, Rupa reportedly woke Mithun up and gave him medicine before going to her room. When he finished bathing at 7:30 AM, he found the room locked from inside. After repeatedly calling out without a response, he broke open the door and found Rupa hanging from a noose.
Family’s Protest and Police Investigation
Initially, Rupa’s family members opposed the body being sent for postmortem, but later relented after persuasion. Meanwhile, police have noted that several rumors are circulating in the village regarding the incident.
DSP Rakesh Kumar stated: “Rupa Kumari has died by suicide in Chhint Raghopur village. The reason behind the incident appears to be a dispute with her husband. The FSL team has conducted an investigation, and the body has been sent for postmortem. The actual cause will be determined once the report is available.”
Police continue to investigate the case and are awaiting forensic findings before drawing final conclusions.
