Update Aadhaar-Linked Mobile Number by March 31 or Face Fines, Warns Transport Secretary

Patna : Vehicle owners must update their Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers in their driving licence (DL) and vehicle registration by March 31, failing which they may face fines, the transport department has announced. The update has been made mandatory to ensure efficient communication regarding traffic violations and other essential services.
Transport Secretary Sanjay Kumar Aggarwal stated that a significant number of vehicle owners still have outdated or incorrect mobile numbers linked to their registration and driving licences. “This creates challenges in identifying vehicle owners in case of accidents or other incidents, and also prevents them from receiving e-challan notifications and other important updates,” he said.
As part of the new directive, the issuance of vehicle pollution and fitness certificates will be linked to the update. Without an Aadhaar-linked mobile number, these certificates will not be granted. The transport department has instructed the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to modify the vehicle software accordingly.
Deadline set for March 31
Vehicle owners who have not yet updated their registered mobile numbers must do so by March 31. Failure to comply will result in fines. Since September 2024, over 32,000 people have updated their Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers, but millions still need to complete the process.
Over 24 lakh vehicle owners yet to update their details
A departmental review found that between 2014 and 2025, nearly 24 lakh vehicle owners had not updated their mobile numbers. As a result, they are unable to access contactless services such as online vehicle registration, fitness certification, and pollution certification.
The transport department has urged all vehicle owners to update their details at the earliest. The update can be done online via the Parivahan Sewa portal (parivahan.gov.in) or through the state transport website (state.bihar.gov.in/transport).
Sanjay Kumar Aggarwal emphasised that updating the mobile number is crucial for receiving e-challan notifications and other official communications. “Without a correct mobile number, traffic violators may remain unaware of penalties imposed on them, leading to further legal complications,” he warned.
