Sabour: Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour, has achieved a major milestone in oilseed research through intensive field trials and reviews. During a recent meeting chaired by Director Research A.K. Singh, scientists conducted a comprehensive analysis of mustard, linseed, and safflower research. The review highlighted significant progress in linseed research, where 53% oil content was recorded in BRLS-109-5 (Entry-08) during 2023-24, making it a strong contender for further trials. Additionally, advanced generation trials identified bi-useful and more branched crosses, creating the potential for higher yields.
In pest control, researchers reported successful results in managing bud fly infestation using yellow sticky traps. This method proved highly effective in reducing pest impact. In agronomy testing, scientists developed new technical packages for the Utera system of linseed and explored nitrogen management using nano urea. They also conducted a comparative study of rabi crops following different paddy varieties.
Safflower research saw new discoveries with the testing of both spineless and spiny plant types for the first time. Yellow and white flowers were also observed in some entries, which scientists recommended for further breeding. In mustard research, 245 germplasm accessions are being maintained to boost hybridization programs. A new entry of Indian mustard with yellow seeds was identified, which could benefit farmers by offering higher yield potential.
The meeting concluded with important recommendations, including registering specific germplasm with NBPGR, New Delhi, promoting yellow sticky traps for bud fly control, and prioritizing the development of high-oil and disease-resistant linseed and mustard varieties. Vice Chancellor D.R. Singh emphasized that BAU aims to make Bihar self-reliant in oilseed research, while Director Research A.K. Singh highlighted the focus on developing high-productivity, climate-friendly oilseed varieties. The meeting is expected to pave the way for significant advancements in Bihar’s oilseed production.
