Patna : Authorities in Patna have launched a crackdown on school vehicles failing to meet safety regulations, with particular focus on those lacking CCTV cameras and Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTD).
On Wednesday, transport officials inspected over 20 school buses, vans, and wingers across the city. Four vehicles were fined for malfunctioning VLTDs, while five others faced action for failing to display mandatory signage such as School Van or On School Duty. Officials warned that repeat violations would result in a fine of Rs25,000.
Stricter Fitness Certification Rules
The Transport Department has instructed District Transport Officers (DTOs) across the state, including Patna, not to issue fitness certificates to school vehicles with more than 14 seats unless they are equipped with CCTV cameras and VLTDs.
A department official confirmed that these measures aim to improve student safety, ensuring that all school transport meets regulatory standards before being deemed roadworthy.
Enhanced Safety Training for Drivers and Attendants
In addition to vehicle compliance, authorities have directed schools to employ trained attendants to assist children while boarding and disembarking. Girls’ school buses must also have a female conductor on board.
To further enhance road safety, the transport commissioner has ordered regular fitness assessments for drivers, both physical and mental, through designated camps. Conductors and drivers will also undergo periodic training on student safety protocols.
