Patna: At least 25 people have died across several districts in Bihar following severe storms and lightning strikes that battered the region, prompting urgent relief measures and a public safety appeal from the state government.
Nalanda recorded the highest number of casualties with 18 deaths, while Siwan reported two fatalities. One death each was confirmed in Katihar, Darbhanga, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, and Jehanabad.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed condolences to the bereaved families, describing the loss of lives as a “heart-wrenching tragedy”. He directed officials to release an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased.
“The state government stands with the affected families in this moment of sorrow,” CM Nitish said, urging people to remain vigilant during adverse weather conditions. He called on residents to follow advisories issued by the Disaster Management Department, particularly during thunderstorms and lightning.
Relief and rehabilitation efforts are under way, and district administrations have been asked to ensure timely support for all affected households. The state remains on alert as forecasts indicate continuing weather disturbances.
