Patna Women’s College Hosts Interactive Lecture for Fashion Students

Patna: The Department of Fashion Designing at Patna Women’s College hosted an engaging and educational guest lecture on Friday, aiming to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in textile science.

The session, part of the department’s ongoing Student Development Programme, was led by Dr Suniti Bhagat, Assistant Professor in the Department of Home Science, who spoke on “Fibre Identification in Textile: A Scientific Approach Through Testing and Analysis.”

Welcomed by Dr Shemushi Madhu, Head of the Fashion Designing Department, Dr Bhagat highlighted the critical role of fibre identification in the fashion industry. Her lecture explored both the academic foundations and the real-world applications of fibre testing, bringing scientific rigour into the creative realm of fashion education.

One of the session’s most compelling features was a live demonstration of the burning test—a widely used preliminary method for identifying fibre types. Under careful supervision, students examined the odour, flame behaviour and residue of various textiles, gaining hands-on insight into the material properties that influence design, durability and sustainability.

“Understanding the science behind fibres is not just a classroom concept; it’s an industry essential,” said Dr Bhagat, encouraging students to approach textiles with both curiosity and analytical precision.

The lecture concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by session coordinator Geetanjali Choudhary. As a gesture of appreciation, Dr Bhagat was presented with a handmade painting by faculty member Asha Pandey.
