Patna: Bihar is likely to experience a surge in heat intensity starting Sunday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting a fresh heatwave spell over the next four days. Daytime temperatures are expected to climb significantly, crossing 40°C in several districts.
After a brief spell of rain and thunderstorms, the weather pattern is once again shifting. According to the Bihar Meteorological Service Centre, maximum temperatures could rise by 2°C to 4°C on April 20, with a sharper increase of up to 5°C expected in parts of the state as the week progresses.
Heatwave-like conditions have been forecast between April 22 and 23 in several districts, particularly in the south-western and adjoining regions. Affected areas may include Banka, Jamui, Munger, Lakhisarai, Sheikhpura, Nawada, Nalanda, Patna, Gaya, Buxar, Aurangabad, Kaimur, Rohtas, Jehanabad, and Arwal.
On Saturday, Dehri recorded the state’s highest temperature at 38°C. However, meteorologists warn that this figure is likely to be surpassed in the coming days, with hot day conditions expected to prevail in many parts of Bihar.
While a brief respite may come in the form of very light rain and isolated thunderstorms on Sunday—particularly in Supaul, Araria, Purnia, and Kishanganj—these will be accompanied by strong winds and lightning. The IMD has issued a warning for these areas, but no alerts have been announced for the days following.
The public has been advised to take precautions against heat-related illnesses as temperatures soar and the new heatwave takes hold.
