Patna: In a major green initiative aimed at improving air quality and restoring environmental balance, more than one lakh trees will be planted across Patna. The large-scale plantation drive will include over 200 species of trees such as mango, mahua, mahogany, jamun, jackfruit, and jasmine, among others.
According to officials, the initiative will not only help in combating pollution but also enhance the aesthetic appeal of the city. Major plantation zones include Digha Ghat, both sides of Atal Path, and JP Ganga Path. The plan is being jointly executed by the Park Division and the Patna Forest Division, which are identifying suitable sites in areas under Patna Municipal Corporation, Danapur, Phulwari, and Khagaul Municipal Councils.
Big Trees to Return After Development-Induced Loss
This fresh plantation effort comes in the wake of massive tree loss during infrastructure and road development projects in the city, especially along Bailey Road, Gardanibagh, and Atal Path. While more than 6,000 trees were officially transplanted to alternate locations as part of these projects, authorities have admitted that nearly 50% of them dried up post-transplantation, dealing a severe blow to the city’s green cover.
Urban Greening Strategy Underway
The new strategy emphasizes planting shady and native species that are better suited to local conditions and can survive long term. The initiative will contribute significantly to air purification, heat reduction, and improving biodiversity in urban areas.
“It’s not just about beautification. The goal is to ensure that every resident has access to cleaner air and greener surroundings,” a senior official involved in the project said.
Call for Public Participation
The administration is also encouraging citizen participation to ensure the trees are well-maintained. Local residents, NGOs, and schools may be involved in tree adoption programs to ensure the survival and care of the new saplings.
