Patna: In a significant medical breakthrough, doctors at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, have successfully treated a rare insulinoma tumor using advanced laparoscopic surgery, offering new hope to patients with similar conditions in Bihar.

Nisha Kumari, a 27-year-old resident of Muzaffarpur, had been suffering from recurring episodes of weakness and fainting for the past year. After being referred to IGIMS for specialized care, she was diagnosed with a 2 cm insulinoma—a rare type of neuroendocrine tumor located in the pancreas—under the guidance of endocrine specialist Dr. Anand Kumar.

“Insulinoma causes an excessive secretion of insulin, which leads to dangerously low glucose levels in the body. This can cause symptoms such as fatigue, sweating, and fainting, and may even impact mental health if untreated,” explained Dr. Anand.

Using laparoscopic surgery, a minimally invasive technique involving only four small incisions, Associate Professor Dr. Saket Kumar of the Department of Gastrosurgery successfully removed the tumor. Remarkably, the patient was able to walk and eat normally within 48 hours of the procedure and is expected to be discharged shortly.

Dr. Saket added, “The only permanent solution for insulinoma is surgical removal. Laparoscopy significantly reduces recovery time and complications compared to traditional open surgery.”

Dr. Manish Mandal, Head of the Gastrosurgery Department and Medical Superintendent of IGIMS, highlighted the growing capabilities of the institute: “With access to modern technology, people in Bihar no longer need to travel outside the state for complex treatments.”

Institute Director Dr. Binde Kumar commended the medical team for their expertise and successful treatment, reinforcing IGIMS’s role as a leading center for advanced healthcare in the region.
