Mandiri Drain Project Progresses Rapidly to Ease Traffic and Improve Drainage in Patna

Patna: Construction of the Mandiri drain is continuing at a rapid pace as part of a major infrastructure upgrade under the Patna Smart City Limited initiative. The 1,289-metre-long smart road project, being built over the renovated Mandiri drain, aims to significantly improve both drainage systems and traffic movement between Bailey Road and Ashok Rajpath.

Approximately 1,200 metres of the total 1,289 metres of the drain construction have already been completed. The road, which will begin at Income Tax Golambar and extend to Siddheshwari Kali Temple near Gandhi Maidan Road, will provide direct connectivity between key arteries in the city.

The project, with an estimated cost of Rs 86.98 crore, is designed to directly benefit around 3,00,000 residents. Upon completion, it is expected to reduce traffic congestion in the central parts of Patna while also addressing long-standing drainage issues across wards 21, 24, 25, 26 and 27.

A double-barrel RCC (reinforced cement concrete) box drain is being constructed beneath the road, allowing for easier cleaning and maintenance. The road itself will be 11 metres wide, comprising two lanes of 5.5 metres in each direction. Additionally, the development includes a 3.5-metre-wide service lane, streetlights, signboards, footpaths, street furniture, utility ducts, and landscaping to enhance both functionality and aesthetics.

To mitigate waterlogging during the monsoon season and prevent backflow from the Ganga, the project also includes three desilting chambers, four sluice gates, and two ramps. City officials maintain that the upgraded infrastructure will significantly improve mobility and quality of life for residents once completed.
