Bhagalpur: Two drivers lost their lives in a tragic road accident in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district after two trucks collided head-on near Birbanna Chowk on National Highway 31 in the early hours of June 4.
According to initial reports, the collision occurred around 3 am near the Bhawanipur police station area under Navgachia subdivision. One truck was carrying maize from Khagaria to Navgachia, while the other was transporting ballast in the opposite direction.
Following the crash, one of the drivers was pinned under the steering wheel for nearly two hours and died on the spot. The co-driver of the second truck, who was reportedly at the wheel while the main driver rested, was seriously injured and later succumbed at a hospital.
The impact of the crash completely destroyed both vehicles, and a 10-kilometre traffic jam followed on the highway. Local police arrived at the scene shortly after receiving information and are currently investigating the incident.
Eyewitnesses and initial police assessments suggest that excessive speed may have caused the accident, with the co-driver of the maize-laden truck unable to control the vehicle.
As of now, the identities of the deceased have not been confirmed, but preliminary findings indicate that one of the drivers was from Koderma district and the other from Muzaffarpur. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem at the sub-divisional hospital.
The police are continuing efforts to ease the highway congestion and trace the individuals who reportedly fled the scene after the accident.
