PATNA – As winter tightens its grip, the chilling effect is not only being felt on the ground but also affecting air travel in various parts of Bihar. Widespread fog and low visibility are causing significant delays in flight schedules, ranging from 45 minutes to a staggering 4 hours.

The latest incident involves Indigo flight 6E 6719 originating from Hyderabad and bound for Patna, which experienced a delay of 3 hours and 30 minutes. The persistent foggy conditions are hampering flight operations, creating challenges for both airlines and passengers.

One critical factor exacerbating the situation is the absence of an Instrument Landing System (ILS) at Patna Airport. ILS is a crucial technology that facilitates precise runway visibility, enabling pilots to execute blind landings even in adverse weather conditions like fog.

The ILS employs two radio beams to guide pilots with azimuth information during the landing process. The system aids in blind landings by offering localizer (LOC) guidance, utilizing lights installed on either side of the runway to enhance visibility, particularly when it is low.

The lack of an effective support system for plane landings in Patna is becoming evident, especially when visibility drops below 1000 meters. The runway’s short length adds another layer of complexity to the situation. Standard safety protocols dictate landing at a 2.5-degree angle from the ground, but due to the runway’s limitations, flights in Patna are forced to land at a steeper 3-degree angle, raising concerns about safety and potential risks.
