Computer Education to Begin in Bihar’s Middle Schools; Over 31,000 Schools to Get Smart Classrooms in First Phase

Patna: In a major push toward digital literacy and education reform, the Bihar Education Department is set to roll out computer education in government middle schools across the state. The Finance Department has approved the department’s proposal, clearing the way for the integration of smart classrooms and computer labs in the curriculum of 31,297 middle schools during the first phase of the initiative.
Students from classes 6 to 8 will now study computers as a regular subject, and schools will soon receive textbooks focused on basic computer knowledge, covering essential tools like Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The move marks a significant step towards bridging the digital divide in rural and semi-urban parts of Bihar.
Smart Classrooms, Trained Teachers to be Deployed
According to officials, each school will be equipped with smart class infrastructure, including computers and related equipment. The Education Department will also deploy trained teachers and computer experts to deliver practical and theoretical lessons on computer literacy.
An official from the department stated, “Computer teachers will be appointed, and textbooks designed around basic computing will be introduced shortly. This initiative is aimed at preparing students for a digital future.”
Initiative to Expand to Primary Schools in Second Phase
Following the rollout in middle schools, the second phase of the project will introduce computer education in 40,566 government primary schools, targeting students of classes 3 to 5. This expansion will ultimately cover all 71,863 government primary and middle schools in Bihar.
This initiative stems from a December 2024 directive by Additional Chief Secretary Dr. S. Siddharth, who had instructed the Directorate of Primary Education to draft a proposal for introducing computer education in primary schools. The Education Department included the plan in its budget, and it was formally announced during the Bihar Legislative Assembly’s budget session earlier this year.
Key Highlights:
- Phase 1: 31,297 middle schools to start computer classes for classes 6–8.
- Phase 2: 40,566 primary schools to be covered for classes 3–5.
- Curriculum: Will include Microsoft Office tools, basic IT knowledge.
- Infrastructure: Smart classes and computer labs to be installed.
- Staffing: Trained teachers and IT experts to be appointed.
The program is part of Bihar’s broader strategy to modernize public education, equip students with 21st-century skills, and ensure digital inclusion across all socio-economic backgrounds.
