Patna: Amid sweltering conditions across Bihar, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for 12 districts and a yellow alert for 26 districts of the state, warning of heavy rain, gusty winds, and lightning on Monday. Parts of North and East Bihar have already begun receiving rainfall, while South Bihar, including Patna, is expected to witness weather changes by late evening.
Despite overcast skies, there has been little relief from humid heat, with easterly winds pushing humidity levels to 60%. According to the Patna Meteorological Centre, monsoon is likely to enter Bihar between June 17 and 20, and cover the entire state by June 25. Notably, this year the state is expected to receive above-normal rainfall, which could be a boon for farmers.
Temperature Trends and Rainfall Updates
The maximum temperature in Patna was recorded at 38.7°C, which is 2.8°C below normal. However, the real feel remained high due to elevated humidity. Meanwhile, Rohtas emerged as the hottest district at 41.8°C.
In contrast, northeastern districts like Kishanganj saw heavy rainfall accompanied by wind speeds of 30–40 km/h, bringing the temperature down to 23.5°C. Bhagalpur and Aurangabad also experienced light rain and cloudy skies on Sunday.
Tragic Lightning Strike in Buxar
In a tragic incident, a minor boy died due to lightning in West Dera village, Buxar district. The victim has been identified as Akash Kumar, son of Ramshankar Yadav. He was reportedly grazing buffaloes when the weather suddenly turned. As per family members, lightning struck during a sudden thunderstorm, killing him on the spot.
Monsoon Arrival and Impact on Agriculture
Meteorologist Ashish Kumar said the southwest monsoon is expected to enter Bihar within the next 4–5 days. Once it arrives, temperatures will hover between 30°C and 40°C, and frequent thunderstorms with heavy rainfall are likely.
“The monsoon is vital for agriculture. Farmers should begin preparations based on this forecast,” Kumar added. He also clarified that late monsoon arrival will not significantly impact the winter season, citing last year’s trend of extended cold until January.
