Chhapra/Patna: At least five people, including three women and a child, were killed and more than 15 others injured in a road accident on the Chhapra-Hajipur NH-19 in Bihar’s Saran district on Monday morning.

The accident took place near Bajitpur on the four-lane stretch in the Nayagaon police station area, when a pickup van overturned after one of its tyres reportedly burst at high speed, causing the vehicle to lose balance and topple.

According to police, the victims were headed to Hajipur from Dighwara with a consignment of corn to be roasted when the mishap occurred. A team from Dial 112 reached the spot shortly after receiving the alert, and, with help from local residents, rushed the injured to Sonepur sub-divisional hospital. After primary treatment, they were referred to Sadar Hospital in Hajipur. Two of the injured are said to be in critical condition and have been shifted to Patna for further care.

The impact of the crash scattered sacks of corn across the road. The deceased have been identified as Anju Devi (48), Radhika Devi (50), Sonu Kumar (23), Rajlaxmi Kumari (15), and Shivam Kumar (7). All were residents of Dighwara in Saran district.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem and the local administration has assured proper medical arrangements for the injured. An investigation into the incident is underway.
