Gopalganj: In a strong move against crime, the police in Gopalganj, Bihar, arrested 1,251 people in just 31 days. The arrests were made in the month of May as part of a special campaign to control criminal activities in the district. According to official data, the police took action against people involved in serious crimes such as murder, robbery, extortion, and alcohol smuggling.
Among the arrested were 12 accused of murder and 161 for attempted murder. There were also arrests for robbery, rape, and crimes under the SC/ST and NDPS Acts. A large number of people—264—were caught for drinking alcohol, and 226 for smuggling it. Bihar has a liquor ban in place, and police say they are working hard to enforce it. In total, 545 accused people also surrendered in court due to pressure from the ongoing raids.
During the campaign, the police also recovered 8,698 litres of illegal liquor, 13 weapons, 138 motorcycles, and several other vehicles. They managed to rescue 27 kidnapped people and recovered important documents like Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, and even gold jewellery. Some strange items were also found, like 20 kg of rice and tools used for making country-made guns.
In addition, women’s help desks in local police stations resolved 251 cases related to family and social disputes. The cybercrime team also recovered nearly Rs 18.8 lakh taken from people through online fraud. Police said they also brought many former prisoners to the station for a “goon parade” to keep a close watch on repeat offenders.
