Patna: A prisoner escaped from Patna Civil Court on Tuesday morning after cutting the rope of his handcuffs and fleeing through a toilet window. The man, identified as Vikas Kumar, had been brought from Phulwari jail for a court hearing at around 10:45am.

According to police, Vikas said he needed to use the toilet. A police havildar, Thug Ram, took him there. Vikas was still handcuffed, but he managed to cut the rope and escape through the window, which had a broken grill.

The havildar reportedly waited outside for 20 minutes, holding the other end of the rope. When he noticed the rope lying on the ground, he checked inside and found the window open and the prisoner gone. A complaint was later filed at Pirbahor police station.

Vikas is a resident of Rani Talab and was earlier arrested in a case by Buddha Colony police. Patna police have started an investigation, and raids are being carried out, but he has not been caught yet. The incident has once again raised concerns about the safety and security arrangements in Patna’s court buildings.
