Katihar: Authorities in the district have launched an investigation after a suspected sex racket was reportedly being run from the premises of the Sadar Hospital, a government medical facility. Two women were apprehended by a security guard late at night, triggering alarm and widespread public concern.
According to officials, the guard, acting on a tip-off, caught the women red-handed on the hospital grounds. During questioning, both women allegedly confessed to engaging in sex work and claimed they used the hospital as a base to operate across various parts of the city. “They considered the hospital a safe space. They would stay on the premises and travel to different areas at night to meet clients,” said a senior officer, adding that one of their associates was believed to still be inside the hospital.
The case has raised serious concerns about possible internal complicity, with suspicions that hospital staff may have either supported or turned a blind eye to the activities. Police are now probing whether employees were directly involved or facilitated the racket in any way. “Preliminary information suggests that the women have been operating this business for some time. We are trying to establish the full extent of the network and whether customers were being brought to the hospital itself,” said an official from Nagar Thana Police, which has taken the women into custody.
During interrogation, the women reportedly said they serviced multiple clients in a night, charging between Rs 500 and Rs 2,000. One of them claimed that a third woman, still unaccounted for, operated from within the hospital compound. The revelations have sparked outrage in the community, with many questioning how such an operation could go unnoticed in a public health facility meant to serve vulnerable patients. Authorities say a full investigation is underway and that anyone found complicit, including hospital staff, will face legal consequences.
